More than 1.2 million people in Australia have some degree of Chinese ancestry. And when we consider the total Asian population living in Australia, about ten percent of the continent’s inhabitants hail from an Asiatic country.
For those reasons and many others, Australia is a country that takes its Chinese holidays seriously. In every major city across the continent, each Chinese holiday is observed with respect and inclusion. People from all different backgrounds and ethnicities take part in the festivities.

Private Painting Classes for the Chinese New Year
The Chinese New Year is, without a doubt, the most popular Chinese holiday. In Australia, some of the traditional events and celebrations associated with the Chinese New Year are the Lion Dance, the Lantern Festival, incredible parades, live music, lots of food, colourful costumes, and beautiful performances.
Did you know that it is customary in Chinese culture for families to travel during the Chinese New Year? The celebration begins on Chinese New Year’s Eve (mid-January) and runs until mid-February. During this time, the largest human migration in the world occurs, as millions of Chinese families travel on their holiday. Furthermore, did you know that Australia is the fourth most-visited country for Chinese travelers? Thailand, Japan, America, and Australia receive tens of millions of Chinese tourists during the Chinese New Year.
With much of the excitement occurring right here in Australia, one of the best times to celebrate Chinese culture and art is during the Chinese New Year. Such is a time when you and your family or friend group can schedule a private painting class and create beautiful paintings of Chinese dragons, flowers, costumes, foods, and fireworks.
Social Painting Classes for Golden Week
While the Chinese New Year gets the most attention for its fantastic festivals, parades, fireworks, and bright colours, Golden Week is another prominent holiday for the Chinese people. This holiday is more of a patriotic one, as it is centered on the Chinese “National Day.” During this holiday, Chinese residents get one week off from work, and many use that week to travel abroad.
The Golden Week is an excellent time to schedule a private painting class. This holiday occurs in early October each year, which is coincidentally a fantastic time of the year to schedule a private painting class at an outdoor venue. You and your family, friends, or co-workers can paint your renditions of Chinese art in a sunny, warm park in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Alice Springs, Canberra, Adelaide, Darwin, or Gold Coast.
Group Painting Classes During the Lantern Festival
The Lantern Festival is a unique event that marks the end of the Chinese New Year Celebration. The Lantern Festival (Yuanxiao Jie in Chinese) begins on the 15th day of the first lunar month following New Year’s Day. In China, residents of each town create an exhibition of coloured lanterns at night. That includes making lanterns, lighting them, and hanging them on gates, street signs, city squares, government buildings, homes, city parks, etc. Throughout entire neighborhoods, myriad lights festoon each house and building.
The incredible nighttime sight of thousands of lanterns can also be seen in Australia, especially in Chinese-born districts and neighborhoods. The Lantern Festival is the perfect time to make an appointment for a private painting class. Why? Because our Life With Paint artist-instructors love the Lantern Festival and will help you and your group create fantastic artwork inspired by the festival and other aspects of Chinese culture.
Celebrating the Moon Festival (Mid-Autumn Festival) with a Private Painting Class
The Moon Festival is another important holiday. The festival occurs on the 15th day of the 8th month of the Chinese lunar calendar. It is during this time that the moon is at its roundest and brightest.
This festival celebrates the bond shared within Chinese families. The Moon Festival is a time when millions of Chinese families gather, no matter where they live, to celebrate and cherish their family bond. Families cook traditional meals and eat together. That usually involves baking special “moon cakes” to celebrate the full moon and the importance of families gathering and sharing meals.
During the Moon Festival, Life With Paint hosts private group painting classes to help students create beautiful paintings of the folklore of the Moon Festival and other Chinese traditions.
